How to convert JPG to PNG
- 1
Add the JPG
Drop a .jpg or .jpeg file onto the page, or choose it from your device.
- 2
Check the settings
PNG is already selected. Change the dimensions if you need a different size.
- 3
Convert and download
Select Optimize image, then download your PNG.
When to use PNG
Choose PNG when a site or app only accepts PNG, or when you'll keep editing the image. PNG is lossless, so saving it again doesn't add new compression artifacts.
Why the PNG is larger
JPG stores photos compactly by discarding detail that's hard to see. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so the same photo saved as PNG is often several times larger.
Converting can't restore detail the JPG has already lost: the PNG looks the same as the JPG, not sharper.
If the PNG is too large, reduce its dimensions, or consider WebP, which keeps files much smaller.
Backgrounds stay as they are
JPG has no transparency, so the PNG has the same solid background as the original. PixMino converts formats; it doesn't remove backgrounds.
Supported formats
PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.
JPG
- Best for
- Photos and images with soft gradients.
- Transparency
- Not supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, with adjustable quality.
PNG
- Best for
- Screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossless. Can use fewer colours where the change is invisible.
WebP
- Best for
- Websites that need small files.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.
AVIF
- Best for
- The smallest photo files for modern websites.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, often smaller than WebP. Slower to create.
HEIC
- Best for
- Photos taken on iPhone and iPad. Opened by PixMino, saved as JPG or PNG.
- Transparency
- Not used by camera photos.
- Compression
- Lossy and very efficient, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.
AVIF and HEIC use codecs downloaded the first time you need them; after that they work offline. Animated images are converted as a single frame.
Questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG is an exact copy of the JPG's pixels, including any compression artifacts. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save again.
Is JPEG the same as JPG?
Yes, they're two names for the same format. PixMino accepts both .jpg and .jpeg files.
Can I keep the PNG under a size limit?
Often only by reducing its dimensions, because a photo stored as PNG stays large. Set a limit and PixMino recommends dimensions that fit.
