How much detail 500 KB keeps
As a rough guide, 500 KB is enough for a JPG photo of about 2,300 to 3,200 pixels on its longest side at good quality. Many phone photos fit with only a moderate reduction in size, and screenshots usually fit at full size as JPG or WebP.
Common uses
- Portfolio and gallery images that should stay crisp on large screens.
- Listings and forms that allow up to 500 KB per photo.
- Sharing a set of photos by email without hitting attachment limits.
- Turning PNG screenshots into much lighter JPG or WebP files.
When the image is already small
If your image is already under 500 KB, there may be nothing to gain. PixMino tells you when the result is larger than the original, so you can keep the original instead.

PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.

Questions
Will compressing to 500 KB lose visible quality?
For most photos at typical sizes, no. Use the comparison slider at full size to check areas with fine detail.
Can PNG files be compressed to 500 KB?
Screenshots and graphics often can, using fewer colours where it's invisible. Large photos as PNG usually need conversion to JPG or WebP.
Is 500 KB the same as 0.5 MB?
Yes. PixMino counts 1 MB as 1,000 KB, so 500 KB is 0.5 MB, or 500,000 bytes.
