Compress an image to 20 KB
20 KB is one of the strictest limits you'll meet, common for photos and signatures in online application forms. PixMino finds the best quality that fits.

How to get an image under 20 KB
- 1
Add the image
A photo, signature scan or ID picture in JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC.
- 2
Keep 20 KB selected
The limit is already set. If the form gives exact dimensions, enter them under Dimensions.
- 3
Optimize, then apply the suggestion if needed
If 20 KB can't be reached at full size, apply the recommended dimensions and download.
What fits in 20 KB
20 KB is about 20,000 bytes, very little for a modern photo. As a rough guide, a typical photo saved as JPG fits in 20 KB at around 400 to 700 pixels on its longest side. Simple images with plain backgrounds, like a portrait against a wall or a signature on white paper, fit at larger sizes; busy scenes need smaller ones.
Because of this, PixMino usually has to reduce the dimensions as well as the quality. When the limit can't be met at the size you chose, it tells you the largest size that works instead of producing a blurry mess.
Tips for forms and applications
- Crop to what matters first, such as the face for a portrait photo. Fewer pixels means more quality per pixel.
- Keep JPG unless the form says otherwise. It's the format almost every form accepts.
- Scans of signatures and documents compress best when the background is clean white.
- If the form also asks for exact dimensions, set them first, then the limit.
Always under, never over
PixMino counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so your file will be at most 20,000 bytes. That also satisfies forms that count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes (20,480 bytes).
Supported formats
PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.
JPG

- Photos and images with soft gradients.

- Not supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, with adjustable quality.
PNG
- Best for
- Screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossless. Can use fewer colours where the change is invisible.
WebP
- Best for
- Websites that need small files.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.
AVIF
- Best for
- The smallest photo files for modern websites.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, often smaller than WebP. Slower to create.
HEIC
- Best for
- Photos taken on iPhone and iPad. Opened by PixMino, saved as JPG or PNG.
- Transparency
- Not used by camera photos.
- Compression
- Lossy and very efficient, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.
AVIF and HEIC use codecs downloaded the first time you need them; after that they work offline. Animated images are converted as a single frame.
Questions
Why does PixMino suggest smaller dimensions?
At full size, even the lowest acceptable quality can't fit a large photo into 20 KB. Fewer pixels let the image keep its clarity.
Can I get a PNG under 20 KB?
Only for small or simple graphics. For photos, JPG reaches 20 KB at a much larger size than PNG.
What if the form needs 10 KB or 30 KB?
Choose Custom under File size limit and type the number you need.
