How to convert HEIC to PNG
- 1
Add the HEIC file
Drop the photo onto the page or choose it. PNG is already selected.
- 2
Set the size
Large photos make large PNGs. Reduce the dimensions if you don't need every pixel.
- 3
Convert and download
Select Optimize image and download the PNG.
When PNG is the better choice
PNG makes sense when you'll edit the photo further, place it in a design or need a format that never adds compression artifacts when saved again. For sharing or uploading a photo as it is, JPG gives a much smaller file.
Expect a big file
HEIC stores a 12 megapixel photo in a couple of megabytes. The same photo as a lossless PNG can be 15 MB or more, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly. Reducing the dimensions is the most effective way to bring it down.
How the decoding works
Recent versions of Safari decode HEIC natively. In other browsers PixMino loads its own HEIC decoder the first time you need it; after that it's cached. The photo itself is processed on your device and never uploaded.
Supported formats
PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.
JPG
- Best for
- Photos and images with soft gradients.
- Transparency
- Not supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, with adjustable quality.
PNG
- Best for
- Screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossless. Can use fewer colours where the change is invisible.
WebP
- Best for
- Websites that need small files.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.
AVIF
- Best for
- The smallest photo files for modern websites.
- Transparency
- Supported.
- Compression
- Lossy, often smaller than WebP. Slower to create.
HEIC
- Best for
- Photos taken on iPhone and iPad. Opened by PixMino, saved as JPG or PNG.
- Transparency
- Not used by camera photos.
- Compression
- Lossy and very efficient, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.
AVIF and HEIC use codecs downloaded the first time you need them; after that they work offline. Animated images are converted as a single frame.
Questions
Does HEIC to PNG lose quality?
No further loss is added: PNG stores the decoded photo exactly. It can't restore detail HEIC compression removed.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the HEIC?
HEIC is a lossy, highly efficient format, while PNG is lossless. Choose JPG if file size matters.
Are Live Photos converted?
Only the still image. The motion part of a Live Photo isn't included.
