How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. 1

    Add the HEIC photo

Drop a .heic or .heif file onto the page, or choose it from your device.

  2. 2

Wait for the decoder the first time

If your browser can't read HEIC, PixMino loads its HEIC decoder once. JPG is already selected.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Select Optimize image and download the JPG.

Why iPhone photos are HEIC

Apple devices save photos in the HEIF format, with the .heic extension, because it stores them in about half the space of JPG. The catch is compatibility: many Windows programs, websites and forms can't open HEIC files.

JPG works almost everywhere, which is why converting is often the simplest fix.

How the conversion works here

Recent versions of Safari can decode HEIC themselves, and PixMino uses that when it's available. Other browsers get PixMino's own HEIC decoder, a few megabytes of WebAssembly downloaded the first time you open a HEIC file and then served from the browser's cache. Only the decoder is downloaded; your photo is decoded on your device and never uploaded.

The photo is turned upright according to its orientation, so it doesn't appear sideways in the JPG.

Limits to know

PixMino converts the main image of the file. Live Photo motion, depth maps and burst sequences aren't included. Camera details and location aren't copied into the JPG.

HEIC photos are often 12 megapixels or more. On phones with little memory, set smaller dimensions if the conversion fails.

Supported formats

PixMino opens five formats and saves four. HEIC photos from iPhones are saved as JPG or PNG.

JPG

Best for
Photos and images with soft gradients.
Transparency
Not supported.
Compression
Lossy, with adjustable quality.

PNG

Best for
Screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossless. Can use fewer colours where the change is invisible.

WebP

Best for
Websites that need small files.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossy, usually smaller than JPG at similar quality.

AVIF

Best for
The smallest photo files for modern websites.
Transparency
Supported.
Compression
Lossy, often smaller than WebP. Slower to create.

HEIC

Best for
Photos taken on iPhone and iPad. Opened by PixMino, saved as JPG or PNG.
Transparency
Not used by camera photos.
Compression
Lossy and very efficient, but poorly supported outside Apple devices.

AVIF and HEIC use codecs downloaded the first time you need them; after that they work offline. Animated images are converted as a single frame.

Questions

Can I convert HEIC on Windows or Android?

Yes. PixMino runs in Chrome, Edge and Firefox there, using its own HEIC decoder.

Is my photo uploaded for conversion?

No. The decoder is downloaded to your browser and the photo is converted on your device.

Will the JPG keep the photo's location?

No. GPS location and other camera details aren't copied to the new file.

Can I convert several HEIC photos at once?

Yes. Select several photos and PixMino switches to Batch mode, then download all JPGs as a ZIP.
